Either way, I take care of the posing, preparation, and adjustments as we go.
Once we begin, much of my job is making small decisions you should not have to think about. Is your baby ready for the next photograph, or do we need a break? Is a pose worth continuing, or would another position work better? Is your toddler willing to come close for ten seconds right now? Then let’s use those ten seconds.
After photographing Seattle-area families since 2008, I have learned that a good newborn session is not about making everything go according to plan. It is about preparing what we can ahead of time and knowing how to respond to everything we cannot.

How Newborn Sessions Work with Real Baby Life
If your baby needs to eat, we stop. If being held is what settles them, they go back into your arms. If a position is not working, I change it rather than continuing to push for one particular photograph.
We are working toward a beautiful gallery, but we are doing it with the baby who actually showed up that day.
For Deluxe and Mini Wrapped, I plan the styled elements and have the appropriate wraps, backgrounds, props, and other pieces ready. Baby In Your Arms is intentionally simpler because the photographs are centered on your baby being held rather than a series of styled setups.
You will also receive preparation guidance and access to an online styling service before the appointment.
By the time you walk through the door, there should be very little left for you to figure out.
Sometimes the direction is very specific. Other times I will simply get you into a good position and give you room to interact naturally with your baby.
You can focus on your family while I pay attention to how the photograph is coming together.
I do not need to turn that into a battle.
A quick kiss, a hand on the blanket, a few seconds sitting beside the baby, or a spontaneous cuddle can give us exactly what we need.
I watch for those openings and work quickly when they appear.
After your baby is born, we confirm the actual appointment based on when they arrived, your recovery, your baby’s age, the type of session you booked, and availability.
You can have newborn photography arranged before delivery without being tied to a date your baby never agreed to.
A made bed and cleared nightstand may matter. The pile of baby supplies in a room we are never going to photograph does not.
Prepare the areas we are likely to use and leave the rest of the house alone.
It should still feel like your home.
Start by Choosing Studio or In-Home
At the studio, I prepare the environment before you arrive. If you choose Baby In Your Arms, we keep things simple and focus on photographs of your baby being held. Mini Wrapped is built around styled wrapped portraits. Deluxe gives us more time and a broader mix of styled baby photographs and family images.
At home, I work with the rooms, light, people, and everyday surroundings that are already yours. The nursery can be part of the photographs. So can your bedroom, an older child climbing onto the bed, or a dog settling beside the family.
Neither is the “better” way to photograph a newborn. They create different photographs. If you already know which kind of images you keep coming back to, that is usually the best place to start.
Newborn Studio Sessions
The advantage of working there is not simply that I have props and backgrounds available. It is that I control the space and can prepare it specifically for the kind of session you booked before you arrive.
From there, the three studio options are quite different.
One keeps the focus on your baby in your arms. One is a short, carefully styled session devoted entirely to your baby. The third gives us the most time and range, with room for styled baby portraits as well as parents, siblings, and family photographs.
Choose the one that looks most like what you want to remember.

We will create a mix of gently posed baby portraits, parent images, sibling photographs, family portraits, and newborn details.
The session includes five to ten setups with two color themes of your choice, along with wrapped and unwrapped photographs of your baby.
There is time for feeding, changing, soothing, and settling as we move through the session.
Choose this when
Choose Studio Deluxe for the widest range of newborn photographs in a single appointment.
It makes sense when parent, sibling, and family images matter as much as the posed baby portraits, or when you want enough variety for an album and framed wall art.
Another option may make more sense when
Choose Baby In Your Arms when the photographs you care about most are the ones with your baby held close and multiple prop setups are not important.
Choose Mini Wrapped when the photographs you want most are styled wrapped portraits of your baby and you prefer a shorter, more focused studio experience.
Choose In-Home Lifestyle when staying home or including your living space matters more than styled newborn setups.

The result is a varied but visually cohesive collection that keeps the attention on your baby.
Choose this when
Choose Mini Wrapped when the photographs you care about most are styled solo portraits of your newborn and you would rather put the session time toward those images than a broader mix of baby and family photographs.
It is especially well suited to families who love the look of my wrapped newborn work and want a concise collection with thoughtful styling and variety.
Another option may make more sense when
Choose Studio Deluxe when you want the fullest studio experience, with wrapped and unwrapped baby portraits, more setups, parent photographs, siblings, full-family portraits, and the widest variety of newborn images.

Newborn In-Home Sessions
When I arrive, I am not trying to turn your house into my studio. I look for the light, the rooms that will photograph well, and the places where your family can comfortably be together. Then I guide the photographs within those spaces.
Sometimes that is the nursery you spent months preparing. Sometimes it is the bed where everyone naturally ends up together. With an older sibling or a dog, familiar surroundings can also give us interactions that would happen differently somewhere new.
Your home is not just the location of an in-home session. It is part of what makes those photographs yours.

What the session looks like
We photograph your baby alone, in your arms, with siblings, with pets, and with the family together.

It is especially useful when including pets, photographing older siblings in familiar surroundings, or scheduling newborn photos for an older baby, up to 3 months old.

If your baby is older than the earliest newborn window (5 to 21 days after birth), you still have options. The Baby In Your Arms session is available for babies up to 2 months old, and the In-Home Lifestyle session is available for babies up to 3 months old.
Not necessarily.
The more posed studio newborn sessions usually work best between 5 and 21 days after birth. Older babies can still be photographed with an approach that depends less on sleepy newborn posing.
The Baby In Your Arms session and the In-Home Lifestyle session are the two options I usually recommend for older newborns.

That is normal. Newborn sessions include time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and breaks. Some babies sleep deeply. Some are awake for part of the appointment. Some need more time in their parents’ arms.
I work with the baby in front of me and will not force a pose that does not make sense that day.

When your dog is not being photographed, they must remain securely controlled by a responsible adult or be moved to another safe location arranged in advance.
For studio sessions, please plan for a potty break before arrival, clean paws, dogs staying off furniture, and no roaming near props or photography equipment. Accidents, pet-caused damage, or excessive cleaning may result in a $100 cleanup fee.
After booking, you will receive prep guidance and access to an online styling service.
Soft neutrals, light colors, gentle texture, and simple clothing generally photograph well. The outfits should feel connected without matching or distracting from the baby.
Wraps, headbands, bonnets, blankets, baskets, and newborn props are provided when they are included with your session.
