Seattle Maternity Photoshoot Location Guide
Outdoor maternity photos can look very different depending on the setting, season, light, and how much walking or travel feels realistic while you are pregnant. This guide will help you compare Seattle-area maternity photo locations by comfort, scenery, season, and the kind of final gallery you want.
Last Update: June 10, 2026 • Maternity
Choosing a maternity photoshoot location can feel surprisingly hard.
You may start by looking for the prettiest place, but the right location is not always the most dramatic one. It is the place that makes sense for your season, your energy level, your outfit, your family, and the kind of photos you actually want to have later.
After photographing maternity sessions around the Seattle area for many years, I’ve learned that the setting matters, but it is only one part of the final gallery. Light, clothing, posing, weather, walking distance, and comfort all affect how the session feels and how the photos turn out.
That is why I do not think of choosing a location as simply picking a backdrop. I think of it as choosing the setting that will help you feel comfortable, connected, and present during this short season before baby arrives.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the maternity locations I tend to recommend most often around Seattle, including beaches, open fields, PNW-feel spots, and seasonal options like cherry blossoms and lavender. I’ll also explain what each type of setting is best for, what to consider before choosing, especially if young children are joining, and how to plan for travel, weather, and outfits.
Quick Answer
The right Seattle maternity photoshoot location depends on your season, comfort level, travel limits, and the way you want the final gallery to feel.
Beaches and open fields are usually the easiest to plan around in summer and early fall, especially if you want soft evening light. Lake, mountain, river, and evergreen settings are a good choice if you want a more Pacific Northwest look. Seasonal locations, such as cherry blossoms or lavender, can be beautiful when your pregnancy lines up with the short bloom window.
You do not need to choose from scratch. After booking, I send a curated list of location options with sample photos, so you can compare the settings visually and choose the one that feels right for your session.

What Should You Consider Before Choosing a Maternity Photoshoot Location?
A beautiful location helps, but it is not the only thing that matters.
After photographing maternity sessions around the Seattle area for many years, I’ve found that the galleries clients love most usually come from a combination of location, light, clothing, posing, and how comfortable the session feels.
Your photos do not need the most dramatic backdrop to matter. The right setting should support the way you want the images to feel.
Before choosing, think through these questions:
What kind of feeling do you want in the photos?
Some locations feel soft and romantic. Others feel more open, playful, earthy, or distinctly Pacific Northwest. A beach session will look very different from a mountain or forest setting.
How much travel feels realistic right now?
Some locations are close and easy. Others require more driving, a ferry, or extra planning. During pregnancy, convenience matters. A location only makes sense if getting there still feels manageable.
Will young children be included?
If older siblings are joining, also think about how the location will work for them. Parking, walking distance, bathrooms, and room to move all matter, especially if we want the session to feel manageable for parents and not too restrictive for kids.
Do you already have an outfit in mind?
Some clients choose the location first and then plan clothing around it. Others already know what they want to wear. A soft dress may photograph beautifully in a field or beach setting, while a more structured outfit may look better against greenery, water, or a simpler background.
Do you want golden light?
Golden light is never something we can fully guarantee in Seattle, but open fields and beaches usually give us the best chance, especially in summer and early fall.
What season will your session happen in?
A location can look completely different in Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Grass color, trees, flowers, light, and weather all change the final look of the images.
The location matters, but it does not carry the session by itself. A simpler setting with good light, comfortable access, and clothing that works well will usually photograph better than a dramatic location that leaves you tired, rushed, or uncomfortable.
Why These Locations Made the List
There are many beautiful places for maternity photos in the Seattle area, but not every pretty spot is practical for a real session.
When I recommend a location, I’m usually considering more than just the backdrop. I’m also thinking about light, parking, walking distance, crowds, bathrooms, seasonal changes, and whether the setting will be comfortable for a pregnant client.
The locations in this guide were chosen because they photograph well and balance beauty with the practical realities of sessions.
I look for:
- A clear visual setting. Each location has a defined look, such as beach, field, lake, mountain, river, flowers, or greenery.
- Reasonable access. I avoid locations that require long hikes or too much physical effort during pregnancy.
- Enough variety for a gallery. A good location offers more than one angle, background, or image type without having to walk too far.
- A setting that supports connection. The setting should help you settle into the session, not make the experience feel stressful or over-planned.
Should You Choose Beach Maternity Photos?

Beach maternity photos tend to feel soft, peaceful, and romantic. They are a good choice when you want water, open sky, movement, and evening light in your images.
Seattle-area beaches are usually best in summer and early fall, when temperatures are warmer and the breeze is more manageable. A beach can still be useful outside of that window, but comfort becomes a bigger factor.
Beach settings are also helpful if you want photos that feel open and uncluttered. The background stays simple, and the focus stays on you, your family, and the connection between you.
Good for:
- Soft evening light
- Romantic maternity portraits
- Family images
- Dresses with movement
- A relaxed, open feeling
Locations may include:
- Seattle Discovery Park
- Edmonds Beach
- Mukilteo Beach
Best season: Summer and early fall
Typical travel: About 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the location and where you are coming from
What to know: Beaches can be breezy, so clothing and hair choices matter. If young children are joining, we will also think through timing, shoes, and how close we need to stay to the easiest shooting areas.

Should You Choose Open Field Maternity Photos?

Open fields create a soft, spacious look. They are a good choice if you want movement, warm light, and images that feel relaxed without needing a dramatic backdrop.
Fields can feel simple in a good way. There is room to walk, hold hands, include children, and create a mix of posed and more natural images.
The main thing to remember is that grass changes throughout the year. In one season, a field may look green and fresh. In another, it may look warmer, drier, and more golden. Both can photograph beautifully, but the clothing choices and overall mood will be different.
Good for:
- Warm evening light
- Movement and walking images
- Family maternity photos with siblings
- Soft, natural styling
- A relaxed outdoor feel
Locations may include:
- Seattle Discovery Park
- Redmond
- Snoqualmie Pass
- North Bend
Best season: Summer and early fall for Snoqualmie Pass and North Bend. Most Seattle and Redmond field locations are usable year-round.
Typical travel: About 30 to 50 minutes
What to know: Fields are especially beautiful near sunset, but they are also season-dependent. If you have a specific look in mind, it helps to choose a location with the month of your session in mind.

Should You Choose a Pacific Northwest Scenic Location?

If you want your maternity photos to feel rooted in the Pacific Northwest, a lake, river, mountain, or evergreen setting may be a good direction.
These locations create a more scenic, nature-forward look. They can feel peaceful, grounded, and a little more dramatic.
Choose this type of location when you want the landscape to play a bigger role in the photos. The background may include water, mountains, trees, rocks, or open sky, depending on the location and season.
Good for:
- A distinctly Pacific Northwest feel
- Lake, mountain, river, or evergreen scenery
- More scenic maternity portraits
- Families who do not mind a longer drive
Locations may include:
- Rattlesnake Lake
- Snoqualmie Pass
- Snoqualmie River
Best season: Summer and early fall for Snoqualmie Pass and Snoqualmie River. Rattlesnake Lake can work well at different times of year.
Typical travel: About 40 to 50 minutes
What to know: Some locations become crowded on summer weekends, so weekdays can be easier. Travel time, parking, and walking distance matter more here than they do for a simple local session.

Are Seasonal Maternity Photo Locations Worth Considering?
Seasonal locations can be beautiful and unique when they line up with your pregnancy timing. The tradeoff is that they usually require more flexibility.
Cherry blossoms, lavender farms, and other seasonal settings are only available for a short window. They can also be affected by weather, bloom timing, crowds, and travel.
When the timing works, one of these seasonal settings can be worth considering. But I usually think of seasonal locations as a bonus, not something every maternity client needs.
Cherry Blossom Maternity Photos

Cherry blossoms create a soft, romantic spring look. They are especially beautiful when you want a lighter, floral setting without having to travel far.
Location: Washington Park Arboretum
Best season: Late March to early April, depending on the bloom
Typical travel: About 15 to 30 minutes
What to know: Cherry blossoms can attract large crowds, especially on weekends. A weekday session usually gives us a better chance of working comfortably at the location.

Lavender Farm Maternity Photos

The Lavender field maternity session has a distinct look of purple rows, open farm scenery, and a summer feel unlike any other Seattle-area location.
This can be a beautiful choice if you love the setting and the extra planning feels realistic.
Location: Sequim, WA
Best season: Mid-July, usually before harvest
Typical travel: Around 3+ hours and may require a ferry
What to know: This is more of a road trip than a typical local maternity session. For some clients, that extra effort makes sense, but it needs to feel realistic for your energy level, schedule, and family.

Which Maternity Location Type Makes the Most Sense for Your Session?
By this point, you may already have a direction in mind. If you are still deciding, this quick comparison can help you narrow it down.
| Location type | Helpful when you want | Best season | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach | Water, open sky, soft evening light, romantic movement | Summer and early fall | Can be breezy, so hair and clothing choices matter |
| Open field | Warm light, movement, sibling photos, a relaxed outdoor look | Summer and early fall for some field locations, year-round for others | Grass color changes by season, which affects the final look |
| PNW scenic location | Lake, river, mountain, evergreen, or more nature-forward images | Summer and early fall for some locations, year-round for others | May involve more travel, parking planning, or weekday timing |
| Seasonal location | Cherry blossoms, lavender, or another short-window setting | Depends on the bloom or season | Beautiful when timing works, but less flexible |
| Closer local option | Less travel, easier logistics, young children, simpler planning | Varies by location | Often the most practical choice when comfort matters most |
What Else Should You Think Through Before Choosing a Maternity Location?
Comfort
A location may look beautiful, but if it requires too much walking, travel, or coordination, it may not be the right choice for this season of pregnancy.
Comfort matters more than many people expect. When you feel physically comfortable, it is easier to relax into posing, connect with your partner or children, and enjoy the session instead of just trying to get through it.
Outfit and Styling
Your outfit and location should make sense together.
A flowing dress can look beautiful at a beach, in a field, or near water because it adds movement. A more casual dress may be a better choice if you want the session to feel relaxed and family-centered.
If you already have a specific outfit in mind, choose a location that complements it rather than competes with it.
Try on your outfit before the session, too. Sit, walk, turn, and make sure it feels comfortable. Watch for bra lines, underwear lines, or anything that needs constant adjusting.
Hair and Weather
Outdoor maternity photos are affected by wind, humidity, drizzle, and temperature. That does not mean an outdoor session is off the table. It just means we plan around real Seattle weather.
Beaches can be breezy. Mountain and lake locations can be cooler. Fields can feel warmer in summer. If your hair is very affected by wind or moisture, that may influence which setting feels easiest.
Weather Buffer
If you are planning an outdoor maternity session in late fall or winter, give yourself a little extra scheduling room if possible. Seattle weather can shift quickly, and a buffer gives us more flexibility if steady rain, high winds, or uncomfortable temperatures make rescheduling the better call.
Overcast skies are not automatically a problem. In fact, soft cloudy light can be very flattering. The bigger issues are steady rain or high winds that make the session uncomfortable.
Keepsakes
You can bring small items such as ultrasound photos, baby shoes, a onesie, or another keepsake if they feel personal. These details usually work best when they are used sparingly.
You do not need props for maternity photos to feel meaningful. Often, the images clients love most are simply you, your family, and the connection between you.
Pets
Pets can make maternity photos feel more personal, especially if they are part of your family’s everyday life.
The main thing is to plan what your pet will do when they are not in the photos. It helps if they are well-behaved, comfortable in public settings, and able to follow basic directions. For some sessions, bringing another adult to help with the dog can make the experience much easier.
Keep the Drive Relaxed
The mood before the session matters. Try not to use the drive to problem-solve every last detail, fix outfits, or worry about how everyone will behave.
If your partner or children are coming, keep the energy light. Talk, laugh, listen to music, or simply let the day feel like something you are doing together. Photos usually feel better when families arrive connected rather than tense.
Final Thoughts
A maternity location does not have to be the most dramatic place in the Seattle area to create photos you will care about later.
The right location provides a visually appealing setting while still letting you feel comfortable, connected, and present. That may be a beach at sunset, a quiet field, a lake with evergreens behind you, or a seasonal bloom that happens to line up with your pregnancy.
My job is to help you choose a location that makes sense, guide you through posing and movement, and keep the session from feeling like something you have to perform for.
If the outdoor logistics feel like too much right now, a studio maternity session may be worth comparing if you want a simpler indoor setting, less weather planning, and a more controlled environment.

FAQs
The best location depends on the season, your comfort level, how much travel feels realistic, and the look you want in your final gallery. Beaches, open fields, Pacific Northwest scenic locations, and seasonal settings can all work well for different reasons.
Yes. After booking, I send a curated list of location options with sample photos, so you can compare the settings visually. I can also help you narrow it down based on your season, outfit, comfort level, family, and how much travel feels realistic.
For outdoor sessions, evening light is usually the most flattering. Beaches and open fields often photograph especially well close to sunset. Some locations need slightly different timing depending on weather, season, and available light.
Choose a distance that still feels manageable. Some scenic locations are worth the extra drive, but a closer location may be the better choice if comfort, young children, or a simpler session day matters more.
Most maternity sessions are scheduled between 28 and 32 weeks, but every pregnancy is different. If you are hoping for a specific seasonal location, such as cherry blossoms or lavender, you will also need to consider the bloom window and your comfort level.
That can still work. Since maternity photos are usually scheduled around 28 to 32 weeks, we plan around the season you are actually in instead of waiting for a perfect time of year. In winter or early spring, we may choose a location with more evergreen texture or easier access. If outdoor logistics feel too uncertain, a studio maternity session may also be worth considering.
I monitor the forecast before outdoor sessions. Overcast skies are not automatically a problem and can be very flattering. If there is steady rain or high winds, we will decide whether rescheduling is needed.
You do not need to know how to pose before you arrive. I guide your hands, angles, movement, and where to look, so the session does not depend on you knowing what to do on camera.
